While this post is for chapters 15 – 18, there is a 19th chapter for Court of the Vampire Queen, but as I’ve said, I’m not going to spoil that ending for you! This will likely be a short post because I don’t want to spoil too much, but we’re going to do the final fight! Even though these chapters were short and the post is relatively short too, I was still expecting more from the final fight. I won’t say that the final fight scene and the following scenes were bad, because they weren’t, but I would have liked more action in it. Instead it was over before I had much to think about it. Regardless, here is the last couple of charters for you to read!

Chapter 15

“I never cause trouble unnecessarily.” She finally looks at me, blue eyes assessing. “So this is the new girlfriend. Welcome to the family, sweet girl.” She takes one step toward me and laughs when all three men jolt. “Relax, lads. If I was going to kill her, I wouldn’t have walked through the front door.”

Somehow this is more terrifying than if she hadn’t walked through the front door

She finally sits back and laughs a little. “This should be fun. When do we start?”
“At dawn.”

As someone who isn’t a morning person, I can’t think of anything worse! I don’t want to be up at the ass crack of dawn to fight Cornie.

Chapter 16

Survive and prove I’m strong enough to rule.

She wouldn’t be so unsure of her survival and be a little more set in her convictions if she had actually trained. What would she do if the men failed in their part of the plan? Just lay down and die?

“Your claws.”
It takes a moment to realise he’s speaking to me, to understand what he wants. I close my eyes and concentrate, trying to envision my fingers changing to claws the way they’re done in the past. For a beat, nothing happens, but then a faint tingling starts at my fingertips. It’s tempting to open my eyes, but I resist, focusing on the feeling, on expanding it until my nails shift.

For all their show of love for her, Rylan seems to be the only one that actually wants to prepare her. Sure, Malachi has done a couple training sessions with her, but that was in the last two Acts and nothing since. Rylan knows that this is the crux of their situation and any little bit helps. Also, hopefully now she realises that it’s actually not all that hard and, if she had been practicing before, it would be easier now.

Chapter 17

Rationally, I know a year hasn’t even passed, but it feels like several lifetimes since I last moved about in this place.

It’s been 2 months TOPS.

A little red dot appears on his throat. “Father?”
“What?”
“I hope this hurts.” My hand goes to my boot, to the long knife in the sheath there, both courtesy of Grace’s bag.
“I changed my mind. You die-“
His throat explodes.

I must say, this was a pretty satisfying moment especially considering that Cornie’s power comes from his ability to speak. No words, no power.

Chapter 18

Rylan’s voice rises from the back of my mind, memory, or something else.
Never defenceless. Never weaponless.
Do not panic.

Again, Rylan is there for her when she needs it while Malachi and Wolf are nowhere to be found, physically or telepathically. It’s also pretty telling that, when she is in her most dire moments, when she needs someone to tell her what to do or she is literally going to die, it’s Rylan that she returns to.

Conclusion

Did they win? Did they lose? Guess you’re going to have to read the book for yourself. I think that this is the most that Mina has actually stood up for herself in this entire book, was just one chapter. There was a lot of lead up and then the climax of the story, but not much I can really say without spoiling it! I certainly would have liked the fight to be longer and the politics of it to be more pronounced, but it’s also not my book. My overall final comments on Court of the Vampire Queen will be up later today if you’d like to read that too and then we are onto… Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard!
